The Children’s Authority of Trinidad and Tobago expresses its profound sadness at the death of 12-year-old Mercedez Layne, whose life was tragically cut short over the weekend. The Authority extends its deepest condolences to the child’s family, friends, classmates, community, and all those whose lives have been forever changed by this unimaginable loss.
No child should ever experience fear, abuse, exploitation, or violence. Children have a fundamental right to life, safety, and the opportunity to grow in an environment where they can achieve their full potential. That right was violated, and the Authority condemns this horrific act.
The Authority appeals to the justice system to pursue a full and thorough investigation and to hold all those involved, fully accountable under the law.
The Authority reiterates its commitment to strengthening partnerships, increasing public education and advancing awareness initiatives that create safer environments for our nation’s children.
The public is reminded to report any concerns about the safety of a child to the Police at 999 or to the Authority at 996.
